According to WHO water containing TDS level below 300 mg/l is taken as the excellent level of drinking water. The maximum concentration of TDS below 1000mg/l is usually acceptable for drinking. However, the acceptability for minimum TDS of drinking water may differ according to the circumstances.

According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, the ideal TDS concentration for drinking water is below 300mg/L. The maximum permissible limit of TDS in water is 600mg/L. Due to lack of good sources of pure water, most of the people have to drink water with TDS higher than the permissible limit.
